A collaboration between Public Books and SFMOMA’s Public Knowledge initiative, this discussion explores the impacts of globalization with an eye to the specific San Francisco Bay Area context. How do the consequences of global capital in San Francisco from hyper-gentrification to sea-level rise reflect challenges for cities around the world? How does San Francisco’s tech-based knowledge economy create greater disparities and complexities in addressing injustice? Can a city be reclaimed through its public spaces and institutions? Can discourse, neighborhood advocacy, and activism revitalize our civic imagination? Panelists include Saskia Sassen, Teresa Caldeiras, and Sophie Gonick.

Many notable modern and contemporary artists use pre-existing objects or images from logos and advertising, to celebrity portraits for example in their work to challenge the ways we engage with art. Appropriation often raises questions of originality, authenticity and authorship. What are the bounds of appreciation versus appropriation? How do the principles of intellectual property protect against or encourage appropriation in art?  This talk discusses how appropriation manifests itself in visual art, shifting our understanding of creativity and the meaning of ownership.

A collaboration between Public Books and SFMOMA’s Public Knowledge initiative, this discussion explores how tech might be redirected beyond capitalism, towards an alternative future. Could new technologies, whether imagined or real, point to a shared future of economic cooperation and democratic decision-making? Could new technologies prioritize addressing human needs and the greater threat of climate change? Or has history shown us that our faith in tech is misplaced—that its abuses and manipulations outweigh its potential to liberate? Referencing science fiction, art, design, and beyond, the panelists investigate the possibilities of a new technological dawn. Participants include Finn Brunton, Kim Stanley Robinson, Xiaowei Wang, Andrea Steves, and Caitlin Zaloom.

This special afternoon highlights stories located in the heart of the Philippines and the United States, illustrating the often untold and intertwined histories of both nations. Gina Apostol will be joined by Bay Area-based Elaine Castillo who will read from her novel America is Not the Heart. Apostol and Castillo will be in conversation following the readings.

Woody LaBounty will give a presentation on the massive, 3-D scale model of San Francisco created by the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s. Described by someone recently as "a pre-Internet Google Street View," the mostly-wood 37' x 40' model depicts every structure standing in the city at the time. Parks, lakes, theatres, schools, and even the color schemes of individual houses are accurately represented. Today, the model provides a fascinating historical viewpoint of a San Francisco both familiar and alien at the same time. Woody will explain the purpose and creation of the model as well as point out highlights, changes, and the development of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood using sections of the model on display in the branch.

During the New Deal, the San Francisco Planning Department commissioned a large-scale model of the city, complete with buildings, trees and roads. The model was kept in crates for decades, like a time capsule of San Francisco in the late 1930s. The model is filled with detail, but how can we evaluate it as a historical record? Luckily, we have data and tools we can use to compare the model to the living city. During this program, we will use 1938 aerial photographs of The Haight, The Panhandle and Alamo Square to analyze the model for completeness, accuracy and detail. Then, using modern satellite imagery, we will investigate how the city has changed over the past 80 years.

San Francisco is both a City of bold vision that can lead a nation in a new direction and a City that anchors itself firmly in history. Forces for change and preservation push and pull through economic cycles to build the physical City that we see today. In large parts of the city, the hills and humanity are unchanged from the 1938 model. In the Downtown and SoMa neighborhoods, new hills rise from building clusters. When San Francisco allows growth, it does so with demands for public benefits such affordable housing, childcare, open space, art and metering. Join the city planners who convened these public discussions around downtown growth from 1970’s to today, as they explore the ideas, people and power associated with growth in the City by the Bay.

Across the country, lawyers are fighting gerrymandering cases in the courts. In Washington, the FTC is investigating Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Online, communities are organizing. Data has irrevocably altered our political landscape. At the level of political structures and infrastructures themselves, through the political process, to the larger framework of civil society, we live in an era when the intersection of media, technology, and politics is producing profound, and profoundly unpredictable, effects on the nation. In the lead-up to the 2018 midterm elections, join the UC Berkeley Center for New Media, SFMOMA’s Public Knowledge Initiative, the UC Berkeley School of Journalism, and Boalt School of Law for a symposium, where we explore how our political system has been -- and might be -- “hacked” in ways its framers could never have imagined.

Public Knowledge artists-in-residence Bik Van der Pol have pulled a New Deal scale model of the City—based on 1938 aerial photographs—out of storage crates and into the light. Inspired by the Halprins’ 1970s collective creativity and community planning efforts, their project, “Take Part” will explore local histories with City neighborhood residents as library branches display relevant sections of the model beginning in early 2019. Creators of a 2017 cultural map of southeast San Francisco, Kate Connell and Oscar Melara, with cartographer Sofia Valera Airaghi, also ask, “Can we build a collective cultural life together?” Their projects, including Moving Art House, are designed to do just that. Join these artists in a conversation about engaging communities as we look both back and forward.
