Take Part: Collective Aesthetics
15/09/2018
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
In an examination of shared and continuing histories, artist collective Bik Van der Pol (AIR ’18) is working with a massive, 3-D scale model of San Francisco created by the Works Progress Administration in the late 1930s. They will bring parts of the model to San Francisco Public Library neighborhood branches in early 2019 to catalyze discussion about the past, present, and future of the city as part of their project, Take Part. In this discussion, the artists talk with local experts about the model’s production, archiving, and reassembly as a practice of “collective aesthetics.”

“Added Value” is a temporary vending project organized by Stephanie Syjuco in conjunction with SFMoMA’s Public Knowledge initiative, and with participation from The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, The Prelinger Library and the collaborative artist team Related Tactics. Over the course of three days, the museum’s Schwab Hall will be transformed into a massive public book sale, featuring a radical re-organization of thousands of used books, with all sales proceeds going to benefit the San Francisco Public Library. A program of screenings, talks, and commissioned artist projects involving the manipulation and transformation of books-as-knowledge will activate the Public Knowledge Library and the Wattis Theater.

Public Knowledge artists-in-residence Bik Van der Pol have pulled a New Deal scale model of the City—based on 1938 aerial photographs—out of storage crates and into the light. Inspired by the Halprins’ 1970s collective creativity and community planning efforts, their project, “Take Part” will explore local histories with City neighborhood residents as library branches display relevant sections of the model beginning in early 2019. Creators of a 2017 cultural map of southeast San Francisco, Kate Connell and Oscar Melara, with cartographer Sofia Valera Airaghi, also ask, “Can we build a collective cultural life together?” Their projects, including Moving Art House, are designed to do just that. Join these artists in a conversation about engaging communities as we look both back and forward.
